Have you ever thought about living in the White House? A very convincing replica of the official residence and main workplace of the President of the United States is for sale for $38.9 million (2023). Located in California, the approximately 24,350 sqft (2,262 m²) mansion has four floors, 11 bedrooms, nine bathrooms and five half-baths.
Built in 1878, the first owner of the mansion was businessman William H. Howard. Later, in 1927, the residence was acquired by George R. Hearst – William Randolph Hearst's eldest son – and, in 1930, it underwent an extensive renovation, acquiring new equipment and appliances. According to Punch Magazine, a local publication based in San Francisco, George Hearst wanted to be president, which inspired the changes made to the house.
American architect Julia Morgan was responsible for transforming the house into a copy of the White House, adding a circular entrance, windows, columns and Palladian wings to its structure. The similarities go beyond the facade, as the mansion has a replica of the Oval Office and the East Room, as well as a recreation room, home theater, gym, wine cellar and rooftop deck.
The home is not the only White House replica in the United States—many notable copies are spread out across the country, including properties in Atlanta; Dallas; and McLean, Virginia, as well as international imitators in places like Hangzhou, China, and Erbil, Iraq.
